Kent Taylor had a dream, and he moved to Colorado from Kentucky (by way of North Carolina) to chase it. Some people are passionate about golf, some shopping, Kent was passionate about the state of Colorado. He also loved skiing and worked in the restaurant industry in the Centennial State to pay for that hobby. He decided to open a Colorado-themed restaurant but after some personal changes in his life returned to Kentucky to pursue his interest. He was successful in his first restaurant, so successful that he began to open a second when he had a fallout with his business partner. He leaves the business and the Colorado-themed to begin a new restaurant, Texas Roadhouse. Where did he do it? Across the river in Indiana of course. That’s five states involved if you’re counting. Regardless, it’s safe to say it all worked out.

Fun Facts:

Kent Taylor had two passions, Colorado, and skiing. He was a KFC as well as a Hooters restaurant manager before opening his first restaurant.

He lived in Colorado for a period before moving back to Louisville, KY for personal reasons

Kent was able to get the former Governor of Kentucky to financially back his dream of opening a Colorado-themed restaurant. With the $80k investment, Kent opened the Buckhead Hickory Grill. The restaurant was successful, but during the planning of a second restaurant, the partnership fell apart.

Kent wasn’t able to use the theme or name for his second restaurant business, so he opted for a Texas theme instead.

When Taylor was trying to get the restaurant started, he attempted to pitch the investment idea to Ross Perot. Perot was at his vacation home in Bermuda and Taylor told the security guard he just needed a signature so to leave the proposal on his doorstep. He never heard from him. He also chased Larry Bird in an airport in Louisville, KY to pitch his proposal but Bird got in a car and drove off. Persistence didn’t stop there as he delivered ribs and beer to Garth Brooks office one day. The food and drink were taken but no word ever came of the proposal. (foodnewsfeed.com)

The steakhouse serves over 300,000 meals per day.

The murals in each lobby are specific to that restaurant and are to represent the local community. The murals are still all approved by Kent himself.

Each restaurant employees both a butcher and a baker.

In 2012, Consumer Reports awarded them the Loudest Restaurant in America. They have won several restaurant awards over the years including a Top 50 places to work based on employee surveys.

In Summary

Texas Roadhouse is a winner. They are one of the best family-friendly restaurants we have reviewed and had the “it” factor to go with it. I wasn’t surprised to see they had won the loudest restaurant award for how kid friendly they are. Having three kids, I have learned over the years that they are a good judge of character when it comes to restaurants. When I say good judge of character, I mean that they can see past the bad restaurants that try to be kid-friendly when they’re not while at the same time being attracted to those restaurants that do it so well. It’s not a place we visit that often but our kids love going and think it’s a fun place. It doesn’t stop there, their fans love their food, and their employees truly enjoy working there.
